We just converted all our office phones to Voice over IP where I work, and it’s a noticable step backward in terms of quality. The cost difference is significant, which is what makes it worthwhile for us. For residential users, however, there’s often very little difference in price, and not using VoIP is not an option. So how can you prove to your carrier that the quality sucks compared to traditional copper?
TestYourVoIP.com has a tool that will initiate a VoIP call from your web browser to either Boston or San Jose and give you a report of the quality as compared to a standard phone call, a decent cell phone call, a crappy cell phone call, etc. It’s a tool to be used much like dslreports’ bandwidth tester — if you’re getting subpar service, you can use it to prove to your provider that you’re not getting what you’re paying for.
