EMC has announced a disk-based backup solution that is as flexible as the tape systems out there, but has blistering throughput — 80MB/sec up to 425MB/sec. The smaller of the two, the DL300, holds up to 37.5 terabytes, while the big one, the DL700 crams in up to 174TB.
internetnews reports that one of these with 32TB and two-year maintenance will set you back about US$450,000, which is not that far off from the price of a comparable tape-based system. That’s good and all, but you’ll still need a separate tape-based system for off-site backups and long-term storage. You would really have to need that blazing throughput to be able to justify the price tag on this thing. Regardless, it’s still going to be on my Christmas list.
