At the APRICOT conference this week, all attendees were issued Hitachi WiFi SIP phones and a downloadable softphone to use to call each other. There are also gateways set up that allow free calling to Taiwan, China and Singapore (with the U.S. gateway still pending).
It’s just a trial, and it only lasts during the conference, but the integration with ENUM and the fact that it cost the organizers next to nothing to put it on (with vendor support), it’s a pretty cool demonstration of the telecom technology that is available today.
