birq sends me an email with a link to some sample MP3’s for a band named Figurine, and says “It’s like Kip Dynamite singing for Depeche Mode.” I’m intrigued, so I listen and realize I’ve found the ultimate band to satisfy my inner geek in any dimension, and their name is Figurine. I buy their songs off iTunes to meet my immediate fix, then order their CD’s on Amazon to find what I’m missing. If the idea of songs about robots, space, and falling in love with your replicant are of no interest to you, then stop reading now. Listening to Figurine is like walking down the street in Los Angeles in 2018 at night in the freezing rain, thinking about cryogenically freezing yourself for a hundred years cause this century sucks. What’s the music like in the year 2118? Those already at the party “would try to describe it, but wouldn’t know what to say.” I’m not a music reviewer, so I feel that I’m not really doing Figurine justice with these descriptions…I know what I like though, and even though I’ve been obsessively listening to Figurine for over a month, I still can’t get enough. If you’re into replicants, pretending what it’s like to live in space, or love sci-fi techno then pick up Figurine. If you’re familiar with Barcelona or The Postal Service it’s safe to say that Figurine will make you smile like you did the night you saw your first UFO.
