Mattel Agent Zero M Sonic Blaster 5530

Sadly I wasn't old enough to own one a Mattel Agent Zero M Sonic Blaster in 1966 but if I had I can assure you that the side would be marked in chalk "I's" for each eardrum I had blown out (other kids, not mine silly!) This sonic bazooka was pulled off the market after parents realized children could blow out other children's eardrums from "dozens" of feet away.

As soon as we can get one of these from ThinkGeek, you'll get a full review, I promise.

I had one of these and I loved it!! I guess I was lucky that I didn;t rupture any ear drums but the shock value of that sound and the thrust of air was used to lift several of those flowing 60's dresses at one of my parents cocktail parties in 1966 Montreal. I would love to have one of them again. This was the best toy of my childhood, closely followed by the Johnny 7 One Man Army; Rifle Rocket grenade launcher Gun.

I have one that has all the paperwork and shipping box it came with.
I have pumped it up and shot it a few times.
I also had one as a kid but it sadly broke and was thrown away.Everything is always for sale but I paid alot for this item.

Yep, an older neighborhood teenager gave me his when I was around 11. I LOVED that thing. LOUD, YES, but it was worth the powerful air blast it gave off. I shot my father from 30 feet away and not only did the noise scare him, but the blast of air was so strong it freaked him out. The red plastic handle finally broke. I wanted to have a machine shop make me a new handle but somehow the handle was lost thus the poor gun was tossed. I'm 47 now and still sad about the loss of that great air gun. Been looking on ebay for years for photos and or to purchase one.

This was one of the best toys I had as a kid. They always seemed to break too easy though. I think I had three total before they were finally yanked off the shelf. Oddly enough, my last one came after they had been recalled. I lived in California and we were vacationing in Seattle, WA. They had a whole bunch of them in a huge toy store there.

This was back when toys were interesting and exciting, not the wimpy things they have in the stores now.

I also had one of these when I was much younger. I am 48 now and have started looking to see if I can find another. This was a great toy.

I had one as a young boy, we didn't get much for Christmas and I was totally over-joyed when I got mine. My father loved it as much as I did shooting Dixie cups off of the kitchen table from across the room. Sadly I am one of the people that loss some hearing from it, and have a permanent high pitched ringing in my left ear.

Donna @ December 20, 2008 06:45 PM

My brother got one of these for Christmas when we were kids in the 60's. "I" loved it too. Our older next door neighbor boys came over and played with it more than we did on Christmas day! I'm looking for one for my brother THIS christmas! He's 50 now but still a kid at heart! Anyone know where I can find one?

Hello! Here is a 52 year old kid that had a mattel sonic blaster when they first came out! One of my favorite toys that I ever owned! That thing was so wonderfully loud and fun to play with! Yes, I may be a relic, but how great it was to grow up in an era of Real Toys! Kids nowdays just have no clue, do they? Thanks for the flashback! Pat

I had one of these toys and it is the one toy I remember having so much fun with. I would point it up in the air as a flock of crows would fly by and they would alter there flight path as if they were avoiding the big blast of air this bazooka would deliver. I would buy another one of these toys in a heart beat if one was available. I did not suffer any hearing damage as far as I know. I also feel sorry for kids now adays everything is to regulated.

7LeagueBoots @ January 21, 2009 12:51 AM

I had something very like this when I was little back in the early '70's. Only it was a smaller hand-held version that came with a cardboard box target. The target had hanging strips of mylar printed with a picture of a spaceship on it. The gun was about the size of a mid-sized Nerf gun... I have no idea who made it, but it sure was fun. You could knock over action figures and such at about 30 feet.

Bharnz @ January 30, 2009 08:43 PM

I have a working one, that still moves the curtains at 30 feet. everything has its price, anyone interested.
no box, and scope is missing, but it shoots, a ball of air.

Stephen Bignault @ February 13, 2009 04:00 PM

My brothers and I had both the Mattel Sonic Blaster and the Wham-O Air Blaster which is the pistol type gun that 7LeagueBoots described. We used to pump these things up, shove the end of the barrel in mud and blast muddy grit at each other. Hurts like hell. Amazingly, no one lost an eye. I do remember my ears ringing though.

Can anyone tell what what made the Blaster work.
Did the red lever cock a piston inside or did it
compress air in a chamber to be suddenly released?
Thinking of hacking something together for fun.

Tom @ March 9, 2009 01:47 AM

I loved the one I had as a kid, but it eventually broke. I thought about it fondly in college when shaving cream fights would break out in the dorm. I always loved to imagine the look of horror the instigators would get when they found a barrel full of shaving cream aimed right at them and their puny can with its tiny little short range stream of shaving cream :-).

By the way, I took mine apart after it broke. The red lever operated a pump - the more you pumped it, the bigger charge you could build up till it started leaking around the edge of the cover that the trigger released on the business end of the compression chamber. Basically just like your ordinary air cannon used on MythBusters to shoot chickens or at the punkin chunkin contest.

TR @ April 5, 2009 11:00 PM

I had one when I was a kid (born in 1958)
used to shoot all my moms Christmas cards down, loved this toy, My Dad broke it while he was playing with it, promised to replace it and never did. Saw one at Starks Warehouse in around 1968, never got it.

XERO @ April 7, 2009 06:31 PM

Never fear guys, I'm on it!I've been searching high & low, every garage & yard sale, since my second childhood started. That's right, I'm another boy in a mans body. So,I figured, since I can't find one, I'll make one.Like that other guy said, the air cannon toy is just like those bigger cannons on TV.
As a B'day present for myself I sent away for the Mattle pattent application drawings from a supplier in N.C..It's the closest I've gotten to the real thing since 1970 when I got my real one at a flea market.I still don't know what happened to that one.My mother denies any involvement & there were some older brothers of my friends whom I suspected at the time but the fact is it "disapeared" regaurdless.
So, now a new mission, and I will have my revenge. Those cats that have been shittin' in my garden won't know what hit them.
I'll keep you posted. The way I figure it w/ the drawings as a guide & some ABS plumbing partz combined w/ some simple machined partz, I should have some good resultz by summer. What ever happens I'll pass on the results via this site.
We'll show these thumb strong new kids what a real toy used to be.Wish me luck. And I'd appreciate any info or tips y'all have.

PEACE
