You may remember the recent story I posted about the Super Pocket Famicom handheld NES system. I shop Lik-Sang, and am constantly trolling their product pages for new and interesting gear. I also have a Lik-Sang affiliate account and the link to their product page in my Super Fami article ends with “lsaid=371690”, which is my affiliate ID.
All that being said, I’ve known for some time that another gadget news site likes to lift articles from us without EVER giving us props or a “via” link and making it seem like they found the news all by themselves. As it turns out they covered the Super Famicom as well but just look at the Read link to Lik-Sang on their article – it ends with “lsaid=371690” too. Are you guys just trying to help us out by adding our affiliate id to the link, or did you happen to lift that link right from our article and try to make it like you found it all by yourselves?
Just in case the link gets changed, here is a link to a screenshot showing the link with my affiliate ID in the status window in the bottom left corner.
Guys, we aren’t a MegaBlogConglomerate with a corporation and clout to back us up. We’re just a “smaller Web site(s) that post information about products and industry news” who are UBER passionate about gadgets and run this little mess of a gadget blog in our spare time and during our lunch hour. We know everyone links to everyone else on the Net, but it wouldn’t really hurt you, you know, to every now and then kick some traffic our way with a via link when we are the source of the find.
Reader comments/feedback are welcome. Remember, we make like 8 cents a SuperFami (no markup on Lik-Sang’s console systems) so while we won’t get rich from the link, we do appreciate your support by adding our affiliate id to the end of the link in your article. Hey guys, while you are at it, maybe you could start adding our other affiliate id’s to the links in your articles! That would be super! 🙂

I think you should kick engadget in the sack.
hahahaaha engadget sucks. it’s a great place to troll though.
Wow, honest mistake, I’ll add a credit right now. Thanks for dealing with this on a personal level, I appreciate it.
PS – I’ll add a link to the no fewer than 18 times in the past ten months that we have given you credit on the site: http://www.engadget.com/search/?sourceid=Mozilla-search&q=gadgetmadness.
That’s not counting times we’ve linked directly to one of your articles or reviews.
Peter, ask him why gadgetmadness supports hate speech!
hahahaha he also removed the affiliate ID from the link. thoughtful apology, petey
ouch
Peter,
Apology accepted. We’ll assume it was just a misunderstanding, and move on with our gadget-filled lives. As always, thank you for your support.
lunacy8m
Well technically he wasn’t apologizing. He was kind of being a jerk about it, if you ask me.
Wow. Just another reason I feel justified in deleting my bookmark to Engadget. After making an ass of themselves with the XM interview, this just tops it off.
I’m a a big fan of gadget madness, but how about less whiny posts like this one and more actual stuff about gadgets? you hardly ever post anymore, and when you do, it’s to bitch about something this minor?
whiny posts? Like the 10 posts before this. Don’t think so. I think he’s well justified in being pissed about this. Engadget has done this to many many sites. They keep pimping highlights on /. and TSS too. They’re all about the traffic and money, not about real blogging.
‘Engadget has done this to many many sites. They keep pimping highlights on /. and TSS too. They’re all about the traffic and money, not about real blogging.’
Did you just call engadget a blogging sellout??
Haha ‘real blogging’. Thats a good one.
Personally, I’m just in it for the chicks.
Just for the record, I do apologize for what happened. It was a mistake, and one that we will try not have happen again. Anyone who reads Engadget can see that when we find a link through another site we give credit. Occasionally we lose track of where we found something, or in our haste forget to paste in credit. It happens, and I hope you can forgive us for the error. All we do is link to other sites, so it’s not like we have any interest in not linking back or providing credit to people.
I have exchanged many friendly emails with lunacym8 over the past few months, and wish that he had extended me the courtesy of dealing with this matter privately. It was a mistake on our part, but not one that merited being blown up like this.
Peter
Waitaminute, waitaminute, waitaminute – birq, you get chicks?!?
Technically, no.
I wonder if all the information we read is all taken from here? I see similar articles on Coolstuffchannel.com all the time. Wonder if this is just perpetual information making the rounds
interesting question Cool Site (you wouldn’t happen to own Coolstuffchannel.com, would you? Cool, um, site!). Gadget sites all want “EXCLUSIVE” content and are in the hunt for first scoops on the latest gizmos. You can tell how much a info leech whore they are by how often they say “EXCLUSIVE” in their posts.
The content I choose is typically on things I am interested in, or tips sent directly to the tipline. I rarely take content from other sites, unless it is something REALLY good. This helps keep our content fresh and different from other gadget blogs. I am not a big fan of the “regurgitation factor.” I’m not saying we are the source for all news, just that I always check the bigger sites before posting an article to make sure I’m not just duplicating someone else’s content.
Have not seen coolstuffchannel.com before, cool site! Thanks! 🙂
WAHT do you mean, and I quote you: “Technically, no.”, not really. what am I? some anonymous person who is just sitting here being a birq chick? gees you wern’t like that last night…
Lunacy8m, don’t listen to him, he IS in it for the chicks, just look at me.

now that peter has apologized, lets just forget about this whole ordeal. i hate it when two of my favorite sites go at it in such a manner.
Hey we’re someone’s favorite site!! 🙂 Cool!
yawn. giving credit is nice, but not mandatory. did a big site find stuff on your blog? take it as a compliment and be proud of yourself.
whining on your blog is far lamer than mining another’s blog for links.
this is a great site. good enough to hold its own, and too good to act like a baby.
and i can’t type the word s*it? on your site? sheesh. maybe you are a baby.
If he is a baby, he’ll just delete your post. Let’s wait and see…
You’re all just bottomnfeeders anyway. You aren’t actually news sites, you just lift information from other sites and put it on yours. Don’t get all holier-than-thou.
Three things:
1) Our comment spam and trackback filter prevents foul language in comments, hence the previous poster’s language block.
2) Both our site and theirs have plenty of original content in the way of reviews, interviews and news.
3) All the other kids went home a long time ago; I’m not sure beating this dead horse will get them to come back to play. Well, maybe Tom Green, but he’s got a thing for beating dead animals.
