Margi Display-to-Go Hands on

June 24, 2004 at 07:53 AM in

d2go.pngMy Margi Display-to-Go VGA arrived today and I've already got it up and working. It works exactly as advertised -- insert the PCMCIA card into your laptop, install the software, hookup a monitor and reboot. When you next startup the display control panel you have a new monitor. The card will go up to 1280x1024 in 24-bit and 1600x1200 in 16-bit, but I'm limited to 1024x768 by the LCD panel I'm using and I've chosen 16-bit because that's what the rest of my desktop is using.

The laptop I'm using this with already supports separate desktops for the internal LCD and an external monitor, in this case a tube I'm also running at SXGA+. Monitor 4 is an old laptop using Maxivista. The layout may look odd but it matches my physical layout failrly closely.

I've been remote-controlling a desktop with a triple-head Matrox Parhelia, but if you can't drag the applications from one screen to another the windows still pile up on your "main" PC. This means that the Matrox is a little wasted at the moment, though I frequently use it to host a PHP reference document on one screen while the maintenance systems it manages display on the other.

I will be adding a fifth screen to this system using the USB 2 adapter recently announced. I could probably try two Margi adapters in the one laptop, but the thickness of the adapter cable makes that look tricky:

Also, I'd be worried about heat, the card's getting a bit toasty already. And anyway, I'm running out of space for monitors. Expect a review soon of some sort of monitor stand that lets me go up.

You're building a replica of the bridge of the Nebuchadnezzar from The Matrix, aren't you? :)

Maybe...

It's not the current configuration, but it's the same 6:
