N.E. Asia Online reports that NEC is preparing to begin manufacturing a new type of battery, known as an organic radical battery. It can hold the same charge as a nickel-hydrogen and be manufactured at roughly the same cost, but can be fully recharged in about 30 seconds. The initial target market is reportedly an emergency power source for computers, but it sounds like they're thinking hybrid cars and eventually, general consumer electronics.
The image is not related to the story, but is the result of a Google image search for "organic radical." It is Isolation of an Organic Free Radical by Devon Paulson, and I thought it looked cool.
