Has the Alien franchise jumped the shark? The last decent Alien film released on the big screen was “Alien3″, and that was sixteen years ago. (Actually, by decent I mean the version of “Alien3″ released on the Alien Quadrilogy DVD set.) But I digress.
I geeked out over the first AVP film, in retrospect probably more because someone finally made another Alien film and I had high hopes that the original franchise would be revived. The early marketing materials for Alien3 hinted that “On Earth, Everyone Can Hear You Scream.” Bringing the aliens to Earth was as lame a concept there was, and thankfully Alien3 took place far away on your favorite vacation prison planet, Fiorina 161. The original AVP film did bring the Aliens to Earth, but at least they were in the Arctic Circle far away from civilization.
The trailer for “AVP: Requiem” sets the stage early declaring “In space, no one can hear you scream. On Earth, it won’t matter.” How right they are, because bringing the aliens to Earth is as lame an idea today as it was in 1991. While I will reserve judgment until I see the film, “AVP: Requiem” looks like it falls into “torture pr0n” category of horror films full of pretty people having their faces ripped off – not this movie goer’s cup of tea.
Sir Ridley Scott, if you’re out there and this signal reaches you – please, please make one last Alien film that sets the bar as high as your original creation did in 1979.
