Imax will be helping viewers visualize a strange new world soon. To seek out new life and new civil… wait, sorry, had my favorite TV show coming on TV just then. Seriously though they plan to bring the red planet a little closer to home in its huge theaters and in all 3 dimensions. The movie “Roving Mars” by the people who normally are mad about the mouse, Disney, is set to knock your socks off and put them in space boots. The experience they were going for with this movie is that you are landing on Mars and get to roam around and see the sights. The rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, were expected to only last a few months but 12 years later are still sending data back to NASA and since they have so much to go on they decided to make a movie and do it up Imax style and that means (for those of you who have been in a cave for a few decades) that it’s going to be projected up on 25, 50 foot by 70 foot (roughly) movie screens around the US. The movie makers used real images stitched together and combined that with 3D CG images based on the real thing. They went to great lengths to take painstaking attention to detail. They take you on a journey to Mars and land you right in the middle of an alien landscape. It will give you a clearer sense of what it’s like to actually be on Mars. Ahead warp 9!
