Space Above and Beyond is one of my favorite science fiction series of all time. Set in the not so distant future, this harsh and gritty series follows five young Marines of the 58th Squadron (“The Wildcards”) as they go to war against the Chigs, a race of aliens who plan to invade Earth. Deep characters, excellent special effects and an intriguing and mysterious plot made it one of the best TV shows of 1995. Space Above and Beyond was created by Glen Morgan and James Wong of X-Files and Millennium fame, and seemed to be a sure success. However in their infinite wisdom, which seems to favor murdering great sci-fi and fantasy shows, Fox Television switched the timeslot for this gripping show no less than three times and then cancelled it without notice. (Very much the same way they later axed Firefly and Wonderfalls, way to go Fox!) It’s been ten long years, but you can now get this great show on DVD – since Fox never aired the final few episodes, I can finally see how it ends.
“We thought we were alone. We believed the universe was ours. Until one night in 2063, on a Earth colony 16 light-years away, they struck. Now we’re at war. We fight when called, in space, on land, and at sea. To lose this war means more than defeat; to surrender is to never go home. All of us must rise to the call… above and beyond.”
