I read everything I could get my hands on as a young lad, and I remember going to the library in my elementary school and finding all the books on werewolves and vampires. There weren’t so many vampire books, but I think the werewolf book I remember reading is The Book of Werewolves by Sabine Baring Gould. I’m sure the school librarian had excellent literary intentions by stocking this book in our school, but the illustrations were very intense and the book actually had instructions on how to become a werewolf. (One reviewer says “be advised that it is very unsettling and absolutely NOT intended for children” – how true.) The influence this book had on me probably explains why I loved the film Underworld and why a sequel to the film whose story centers on werewolves battling vampires is so exciting to me. (Perhaps this also explains why I wake up the morning after a full moon with no recollection of the night before…!)
