Software can be a gadget too!

Software can be a gadget too!Stardock, the people who brought us such programs as WindowBlinds, Objectbar, DesktopX, and Objectdock, among others, now brings to you a website geared for the promotion and distribution of “Desktop Gadgets”. DesktopGadgets.com showcases these cool stand alone programs, some free, some not. The site describes these desktop gadgets as “… a new category of mini-application designed to provide information, useful lookup, or enhance an application or service on your Windows PC or the Web. Examples might include a weather gadget running on your desktop or on your homepage, an RSS Gadget that pulls in your favorite feeds, or an extension of a business application providing just-in-time status on the pulse of your business. What makes gadgets different from ‘widgets’ is that they do not require additional any additional downloads in order to use. They are ‘stand alone’.” So it looks like things may heat up between Konfabulator and DesktopGadgets.com to see who can do the job better. I use Konfabulator but the idea of having independant gadgets is a tempting idea. I have had widgets crash and bring down the whole Konfabulator system. This idea should prevent that from happening.
