The iPod Linux project that has been going for some time now is one of my favorite projects to watch. So far they have developed an opensource linux OS that runs on all current iPod models that supports video, various music formats, additional games, programs and more. Although they don’t officially support the 4th generation iPod’s including the photo and mini it is still rather simple to install it on them. I for one had a relatively harmless installation of the program onto my ipod photo. Cnet has recently posted a how-to guide on the installation of iPod linux onto your iPod. There is also an easy instruction page found on the iPod Linux website. This program is a second bootable piece of firmware that does not harm the Apple firmware on the iPod. It comes with risks but in the end pays off by making that exspensive electronic toy all the more useful.
