Google Desktop 2
The Second version of Google Desktop has been released today. The new version has enhanced indexed searching capabilities inside Outlook, Gmail and more. However one of the biggest additions to their program is the brand new vertical sidebar that has been added. The sidebar is capable of RSS feeds, e-mail inboxes, plug-ins, scratch pad, quick searches, news and more. Theunofficialgoogleweblog pointed out:

Tell me if I’m wrong, and pinch me if I’m asleep, but this thing is starting to look a little like … a browser. It can be minimized manually, but it actually remains open on the desktop even after clicking Show the Desktop in the taskbar. Let it be known from this moment: Google is serious. It wants to take your desktop away from Microsoft.

Google has already been rumored to be developing a web browser before and this may be a sign of their further development of one. That and they are also rumored to be developing an IM client as well.
