Picasa, Googles New Photo and Image Organizer for your PC
Remember the rumored image organizing software for your home computer that supposedly would have Microsoft quaking in their coffers? We’re not so sure Picasa from Google is going to have Bill Gates running anywhere (although we are sure his little tummy could use the excercise) but we’ve installed Picasa, and it did a really nice job of quickly finding all the images on our local laptop. We’re actually kinda impressed at how well it groups photos by year and really like the timeline feature, where you can scroll through your memories based on date.
Particularly interesting features:
* Indexes and Organizes Video Files too!
* Creates HTML albums
* Allows you to print, email, export, and order prints
* Integrates with Hello.com to upload, resize, and post your images to your Blogger weblog using BloggerBot
* Add MP3 music to your photo slideshows
Picasa is free from Google, so what’s their angle? Is there an angle, or is Google just as freakin’ cool as we think they are to give something like this away for free? Where did all these photos of naked women come from on this laptop? We’re not sure, but when we figure it all out you will be the first to know.

    Nothing here much different from any other image organizer.

    Yeah, those other ones are free too, right? :) Actually, the more I’ve started using Picasa, the more I’m finding in it that I like. The interface is slick, and it seems to run pretty well.

    Its basically just a slick way to look at photos. Beyond that it really lacks in features. You can’t tag images, the image “enhancing” feature is just awefu., and you can only print in certain sizes. Finally there aren’t many things to ouput to. Compare that to Photoshop Album where you have some nice image enhancing tools, can tag photos and have multiple custom categories, and also you can output to things like calendards, photo books. etc etc.
    For just viewing your images Picassa is nice and slick although its VERY limited in organization features. For anything else Photoshop Album is better in every way.

    Seems to have pretty weak image type support, no TGA etc. no conversion ability, not group edit… Yeah it’s a nice freeware app but there is simple nothing special here.
