IGN reports that Majesco has a new device to be debuted at E3 that will allow Game Boy Advance users to text message each other from three miles away. Text is entered via a virtual keyboard, and real-time chat is also possible. If a user isn’t online, the messages are queued and delivered when the user comes back online. Majesco’s device (not the GBA wirless shown above) will also have a built-in rechargeable battery and AC adapter, and will work for one week on a single charge. There are no fees for the text messaging “service” – you only have to buy the hardware.
Turn your handheld gaming system into a handheld, wireless text messenger? May you live in interesting times!

I always wondered about the scars on your forehead. Now I know!
I’m all for the quirky, unnecessary gadget, but there’s nothing more like a root canal than using a directional pad to type on a “virtual keyboard”. Text messaging with a phone keypad is bad enough, but instead of going left-left-left-left-down-a, right-right-down-a, oops, b, right-a, etc, I’d rather carve the message into my forehead with a butter knife and walk it over to the person I’m trying to send it to. They’re not going to be farther than 3 miles way, so I should get to them before the loss of blood makes me too lightheaded.
But maybe that’s just me.
